Diets and Medications


Depending on the type of stones you produce and the results of your metabolic studies, we may recommend that you change your diet and/or taken one or more medications in order to minimize your chances of producing more kidney stones.



Eating a Low Oxalate diet may help you from making calcium oxalate kidney stones.  Calcium oxalate kidney stones make up approximately 80 percent of kidney stones analyzed.
The most important thing you can do to decrease kidney stone growth is to increase your fluid intake.  We recommend that you drink enough non caffeinated, non-alcoholic fluids per day so that you urinate out 2 Liters of urine.  The intake can vary based on temperature, activity level and fluids you get in your foods. We generally recommend at least 8-10 cups of fluid per day.
Another important recommendation is to limit your protein intake.  We recommend a maximum of two or three servings of milk or milk or milk products per day, and six ounces of meat/poultry/fish.  A piece of meat the size of a deck of cards is about three ounces.
Oxalates are found in many foods and decreasing their intake can help decrease your chance of making additional kidney stones if you have had this type of stone in the past. It will help to avoid or limit the following high oxalate foods:
Drinks
Dark Beer, Black Tea, Chocolate Milk, Cocoa, Instant Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Soy Milk
Fruits
Blackberries, Blueberries, Currants, Grapes, Elderberries, Figs, Fruit Cocktail, Kiwi, Raspberry, Rhubarb, Strawberries, Tangerines
Grains
Bran or High Fiber Cereals, Fruit Cake, Grits, Pretzels, Wheat Bran, Wheat Germ, Whole Wheat
Meats
NONE
Proteins
Nuts, Peanuts, Peanut Butter, Sesame, Soy
Vegetables
Beans, Beets, Carrots, Celery, Collard and Dandelion Greens, Eggplant, Kale, Leeks, Okra, Olives, Parsley, Peppers, Potatoes (white and sweet), Rutabaga, Spinach, Summer Squash, Swiss Chard, Zucchini
Other/Miscellaneous
Black Pepper, Chocolate, Marmalade, Parsley, Soy Sauce
Other Recommendations:




 
 
Your body can turn excess vitamin C into oxalate so avoid high doses of vitamin C supplements that contain more than 2000mg per day.  Vitamin C rich foods are OK.
 
 

Don't limit the calcium.  Low calcium intake can lead to osteoporosis, and can actually cause oxalate absorption to increase.
